Anthony Durkin: VR Compression – A Runner’s Review

Meet Anthony Durkin - he's got a great story! We're so glad we could be of help. Between the age of 16-22 I ran at a good level, and competed for my regiment when serving in the Army. Unfortunately on leaving the forces in 2005, I broke my lower left leg really badly. I fractured the tib & fib above the ankle and also fractured my shin at the very top just below the knee. As a result of the severity of the injury, I was told that I wouldn’t run again, which was devastating. I was lucky to even…

Shoes…glorious shoes…except when they give us Cankles and Sore Feet!

Sore ankles from beautiful shoes For those of you who love high heels or love someone who loves high heels, you’re no stranger to sore, swollen and tender feet at the end of a night out or a day at work. Whether you’re the one donning the heels or massaging their sore feet, we’ll bet you don’t know all the facts about why heels make feet and ankles swell. There’s the obvious part where extra weight and pressure is placed on the ball of the foot and toes from the angle of the shoe. At a small angle, we’re talking…

7 Marathons in VR Compression Socks

Today's blog is courtesy of guest blogger and VR Compression customer Peter McGahan of the Celtic 7 Marathon Challenge. Peter and his good friend Stephane ran 7 marathons to raise money for some very worthy children's charities and VR Compression and the Compression Advisory were there to help and advise them along the way. Hear how they got on straight from the horse's mouth: "If there was an afterlife I wouldn't want to come back as a sock. It's hardly a bonus. You know, big smelly lumps of feet and all that goes with it. But if you could come…

Compression Socks and Tights Are No Longer for Grandma

Even though she wears granny tights, Jamie Rubin, 43, fits no one’s definition of dowdy. As the director of United States sales for the French designer Isabel Marant, Ms. Rubin travels to Paris at least four times a year on business. The many hours spent sitting in a cramped airplane seat often leave her legs and ankles swollen and puffy. In preparation for her most recent sojourn to France, this past September for Paris Fashion Week, Ms. Rubin decided to try compression tights — the thick hose and socks often favored by older people or those trying to address circulation…

Cold Muscles? Use Compression to help with Winter Endurance!

Unfortunately that time of year, where the days get shorter and colder, is upon us once again. We all need a little extra motivation to go out each day and remain active when the weather is encouraging us to stay indoors. Our muscles also find it tougher during the colder months, making us more prone to injury. Our bodies have a range within which they are very comfortable and aim to maintain. In science we call this homeostasis (same state). Too warm and the body will do everything it can to cool you down, whilst if you are too cold…

Preventing In-Flight Puffy Legs

Do you suffer from puffy swollen feet or ankles? You're not alone; this becomes a common problem during the summer months. The medical name for this condition is oedema, which occurs when fluid is retained outside of the cells of the body. More often than not, reasons for feet and ankle swelling include high blood pressure, being overweight or pregnant (as in Kim Kardashian's case) or because of excessive salt in our diet - plus of course fractures or sprains. However, many people often find themselves with swollen feet and ankles during the summer months, particularly in-flight en route to…

Varicose Veins Explained (Part 1)

What are Varicose Veins? Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins that are usually blue or dark purple. They may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance. Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly. In a healthy vein, blood flows smoothly to the heart. The blood is prevented from flowing backwards by a series of tiny valves that open and close to let blood through. If the valves weaken or are damaged, the blood can flow backwards and can collect in the vein, eventually causing it to be varicose (swollen and enlarged). How…
